Most Renter Insurance policyholders never realize how specific policy language can affect their policies — until they learn how it can affect a claim. My Policy Advocate™ helps you understand your coverage before you need it.
Chloe Davis had a $50,000 renters policy for her studio apartment. When her apartment was ransacked, she lost her $3,500 camera, a $6,000 ring, and her business laptop. The insurer denied the business laptop as “work property”. Her camera was capped at $1,500 and her ring at $1,000 due to sub-limits. Her total $12,000 loss resulted in a mere $2,500 payout.
High total limits are undermined by sub-limits that quietly exclude the most valuable items (jewelry, electronics, business property) unless separately “scheduled”.
Sub-Limits on High-Value and Business Property.
“The following Special Limits of Liability apply: $1,000 for loss by theft of jewelry… $1,500 for loss to ‘business’ property, including electronics used for business.”
Clara flags all sub-limits for common high-value items, prompting the user to compare those limits against the actual cost/value of their property, like photography gear or jewelry.
